Transforming a Dining Room with Decorative Wall Panels
The original design of this particular room presented a challenge. It was defined by heavy, dark wood panels that created a "medieval" atmosphere. While imposing, the room felt weighted down, lacking color, and ultimately, did not reflect the homeowner's desire for a bright, inviting space.
The Dining Room Before
The goal was clear to maintain the architectural interest of wall panels but completely transform their visual impact. We needed a solution that would introduce color and lightness, add texture and depth, and respect the existing architecture while updating the aesthetic.
The Dining Room After
The answer to transforming this space was a set of custom, hand-painted decorative wall panels. The design chosen features an elegant and lively motif of delicate birds and flourishing flowers. This choice was intentional, bringing the beauty of the outdoors inside and instantly lifting the room's mood.
The Process
This work wasn't just about paint on a panel it was a deep dive into historical artistry, natural motifs, and countless hours of meticulous execution. My research began by looking at De Gournay wallpaper, chinoiserie, and Chinese bird motifs. This research ensured that the custom panels would carry the same sense of luxurious, historical elegance that has defined Chinoiserie for centuries.
