Scenic Painting Intensive
This course was designed to bridge the gap between fine art and the technical needs of the film and television industry. The curriculum was built on the philosophy of learning by doing. The classroom was a simulated film set environment, guiding students through various techiques used on set.
Key components of the intensive included:
Texturing & Aging: Students learned how to use paint and various mediums to make brand-new surfaces look like century-old plaster, mold, rusted industrial metal, and weathered wood.
Faux Finishes: Showing students how to replicate expensive materials like marble, stone, and mahogany using affordable scenic materials.
Technical Set Preparation: Beyond just painting, the class covered the structural essentials of the craft, including seaming, staining, and the proper application of molds and textures that can withstand the scrutiny of high-definition cameras.
Terminology & Professionalism: Marlowe provided a roadmap for the industry, teaching students the specialized vocabulary of a paint crew and the expectations of a scenic foreman.
